Simple is what I can think of
when I see the so very simple “undhoali”.
The swinging bed can be a one-in-all;
a swinging seat, an airy bed, a simple living quarter.
Simplicity and ingenuity is what I can think of
when I see how it is made.
A local made, a rare commodity for this nation’s city.
Such a variety you can find in the other parts.
Simple and clever is what I can think of
when I ponder on its harmony with our nature.
Outdoor, indoor – made to weather the sun and bums ![]()
Simple and beautiful is what my mind feels
when I see people relaxing to and fro on its seat.
It sure has a harmonising effect on us, proud idiotic fools. ![]()
Simple and elegant is what I see
in the innovative swing-beds the “undholis” of our ancestors.
Such luxary it holds – inviting a light nap on its lap
Suspended in mid-air, held by the four rods or ropes.
I wish for siesta … a simply swinging rest

P.S.
The theme for this week [Simple] is pretty simple, as it brings to my mind
the simplest of local things, the simplest way of life, the simplest form of relaxation – to lie on a undhoali (swing bed) in the evening breeze!!!

I like the look of those, how relaxing and simple!
thanks Gilly. They sure are relaxing and SIMPLE
sitting on one and enjoying the slow rhythm of the swing is just lovely
Great interpretation my friend nice post
thank you jake. for the visit. and the comment. and also liking it
really encouraging to see you here
I would love several undhoalis around my home! Simple yet elegant
pity that I don’t have any undhoali in my home. I guess that’s the first thing I will get for my dream home
we used to have a huge undhoali when we were growing up. And every single creak it made must have stored so many stories
This makes me want a suspended bed! I think that’d be awesome!
http://wp.me/pPyQY-ww
Suspended bed, YES. also on my wish list for my dream house
thanks for the visit and the comment Joe
simple and elegant! that’s our very own “undhoali”
that sure is our very own Undhoali

I guess that’s something we can call indegenous to us
thank you Laafenn
oh amira, I don’t think we can do that, as I recall reading an article once about swings from Greek which dated back to 1400 BC. But yes, the type we have indoors are quite authentically Maldivian
that’s true Lafenn. Undhoali in its various forms exist throughout the countries and throughout the history. But I guess we have our touch on our undhoalis
Great way to fall asleep!
It sure is a great way to fall asleep. We used to have one at our house when we were growing up
Now no more
On my wish list. Do pass the message if you find the wishing fairy
I simply feel like a nap. ~~~~ : – )
These look so cozy. A very restful place to lie.
It is a fantastic entry for the challenge.
Very nice ….
Thank you Isadora.
They sure are cozy. simple and cozy
In our part of the world we have a slightly different version of the swinging bed. Loved this design and the verse you created. Swinging! Simple!
Simply awesome comment Bindu
I would love to see how your version looks like.
Swings are awesome.
In my recent visit to Thrivananthapuram, I was facinated by a local swing. I think it was bamboo sticks… not sure. It looked like a huge rocking chair … but a swing.
I so wanted to buy one to bring with me … maybe next time I will
Have never seen these before. They look simply fascinating.

THis is MAGNETIC entry!
Simplicity is something I aspire to live for! And this piece just reminds me of that desire.
And why is there a blackout on those beautiful eyes???
It’s not good for them, they need to enjoy the sunlight!
And who’s she, Ms. Maldives?
MAGNETIC eh?!!!!

make one undhoali for yourself and do away with that bed
those eyes cannot be revealed for it holds a lot of stories and a lot of secrets
hey guess what? undhoalin ma varah boa anburaane?
So this is one of my enemy in those days. I remember one day a brother visited and I had to sit with him on it for sometime. I couldnt tell him that i wasnt feeling well. After sometime I couldnt hold any longer and puke on all over the place
same here MFB
My head is not made for swinging undhoalis, AC car rides [one reason I stick to a motorbike], rollercosters, or dhoani rides on lolling waves … a few minutes I can stand of these.
I am alright if I lie down … But if I had to sit on it swinging back and forth I will also end up puking
just like you did ….
did you ‘brother’ find out he was the cuase for your puke ????!!!
dizzy or not, I still enjoy undhoalis
I like those hanging beds!
