I tend to agree with this video.
It was a coup is what I believe.
The current President (the ex Vice President) I do respect,
I did respect. But now I question his integrity.
He was part of that government for three years!
Whatever glory or whatever scandal
President Nasheed is accused of,
the then Vice President Waheed is party to it.
If he was so opposed to the President’s ways
he should have resigned. But as we know, he stayed.
And deviously schemed to overthrow the President -
and to undermine the ruling party – MDP.
What has this world come to?
Educated intelligent people running after power;
running after glory, leisure, grandeur …
Overthrowing a democratically elected President
and the Vice President of that very government
swearing-in as the President
and changing the Cabinet
to his whim.
I no longer want to know whether they are competent or not.
To me, the current one is a puppet government,
orchestrated by the then opposition – now the people in power.
Power is such a devil.
The red eyes, the tears in the former President’s face say so much about how much cares for his country as opposed to the pompous speech given by the now President, such a stark contrast! But unfortunately rarely do the good guys get the credit they deserve, and they often are outnumbered and outplayed by the bad guys who can be devious and sophisticated (call them intelligent or educated), only for the wrong purposes! Similar group of “intelligent and educated” people are the ones who have almost brought down the American economy, by exploiting the people through ponzi schemes in Wall Street. What can you do?! It is depressing.
Power. Greed. Often rule. And that explains why we have such a messed up world in may ways.
Great piece mon amie! I hope the best will come for your country! That people will not stop from demanding a democratic transfer of power and put a leader of their choice in the palace!
What President Nasheed has done is tantamount to impossible in such a short span of time. And with such opposition … the civil servants programmed to be submissive for 30 years of the maumoon presidency were everywhere and most high officials were loyalist to the 30 year leader. The opposition parties all headed by rich businessmen also wanting the same office were doing everything possible to discredit Nasheed’s efforts and plans … In that environment, getting anything achieved was a high order.
President Nasheed employed drastic methods, took drastic decisions, implemented unpopular yet important changes … so in once sense that’s his downfall… but in my eyes .. those very actions also gained him many more loyalist – like myself. I never was in favour of his outspoken radical methods in those early days when he was criticising the qayoom government for the corruption and power accumulation…. I did not even vote for the man to become president (in fact I did not vote for anyone) … but my opinion of him today is totally different. After witnessing three years of presidency I think only a person like him can change this country … He has guts …
A great leader is one who does something that is not popular. A great leader must have guts. A puppet leader is a coward, a sellout, a crook, a selfish demigod wannabe!
Amira you’re brave to put this in your blog. Be safe. Just checked local news and came to realize the criminal court has slapped on our face again! We’re definitely back in the days of old regime. I feel blogging about certain issues may not be very safe these days. The current illegal government refuse to even acknowledge that thousands protest every night. They would silence people and ignore the real issues and stay in power with the help of Police, MNDF and judiciary on their side. Really sad all this is happening. Once again, be safe and take care.
What I believe, I believe. I don’t care if the current government agrees with what I have to say. Obviously it does not care to hear what the majority of the voting public has to say.
The current government is not a legal government – The moment he changed his cabinet to include hardcore vocalists and activists of opposition parties, that moment this government became illegal. I can agree that when and if the President resigns, the vice president takes over. BUT The Vice President was there because he came agreeing to follow President Nasheed’s manifesto. President Nasheed represented the Maldivian Democratic Party. And that party was the one which got the vote in the election. The opposition (then DRP and now the breakaway group of DRP the Z faction later named PPM) has no place in this government. The voters voted DRP/PPM out – on both rounds of the vote.
So how can anyone believe that this current government can be run by them !!! It is beyond my comprehension. And THAT is only if it was a legit resignation by the President.
Anyone with a sane mind (whether a MDP fan or not) will know that Nasheed was not given a choice by the Defence force nor the Police. The situation outside the headquarter was being dictated by the PPM mafia leader UMAR NASEER … who always advocates bloody coups … So Nasheed’s Resignation was a bold one, I salute him for making that decision … For if he had not, we all know how dirty, how chaotic, how bloody the day would have turned out.
It really is pathetic
I agree with Flora, mon amie! Be cautious.
This is not to scare you or anything, but caution is always important.
to me politics always been a crap,.
My fav poet iqbal once said
“a nation grows in the hands of the poet and dies in the hands of politicans “
I agree with you panda !…politics is complicated nonsense. I try to stay away. sometimes lol
lol cox of politics i never watch new nor i read newspapers, even if i do so, i just read the show biz and sports section
You wonder why the bad ones hang on politics, eh?
Cuz the good ones STAY AWAY from it, letting the bad apples mess things up! I disagree with views that say we must stay away from it. No, we must be involved to make things better, or whatever we think is a better alternative; otherwise, we will let others do the dirty job, we not only find ourselves at the complainers’ table, but we will also get a share of the consequences of their foolish mistakes.
Politics is pervasive. You breathe it like air. Everywhere you go it follows you, you have no choice. Look guys, you say you stay away from politics, but you are here commenting under a politics thread! lol see what I mean!?
eva you are right. politics is complicated. I also try to stay away sometimes. But when things are this crazy and this injust, my mind cannot rest without voicing my thoughts
and yes Elyas, we cannot seperate ourselves from politics. we have a responsibility for our nation, for how it develops and evolves.
hey demonsking … it is easier to isolate onself from politics. But our very being is dictated by the policies they implement or not implement. So me being the patriotic fool I am cannot stay away from it. I feel for it with a vengence
to keep a good balance.
but i guess we need poets as much as we need politicians
that’s a great quote by iqbal
lol u can keep ur self away for politics by not reading all that news
and things , and stay happy
and hey i dont agree to that , if one wants to be a patriotic he doesnt have to keep knowledge about politics, for being a good patriotic he has to be sincere with his country thats all B-) thats what i think
Panda … your take though funny I still force myself to disagree.
… Knowledge about politics is not good enough to be patriotic, you have to be involved in the nation building process, you have to use your voting right … among other things.
Staying a bystander is not an option unless you are a foreigner to the land.
Amira … I dont see you being a patriotic fool. Even me who is not a citizen of maldives, I feel the pain that you feel for your country. There is a butterfly effect to everything in life. And I can only support you to stand up for what you believe in and to call a spade spade to demand for your rights and for fair and democratic leadership. Any person should demand that. That’s why we have governments in the first place. Not to exploit us.
wow cool
guys don’t fight over it. both of you are right in your ways.
we vote for a government because not every single person has the aptitude to criticise or direct the country. That’s why we have a parliament where the public vote a representative on their behalf to sit on all the decisions… that way the public actually gives the parliamentarians the right to make the right decisions for the public in general.
but the reality is that power gets to peoples heads quite easily … and given the democratic changes that has been taking place in maldives so swiftly, people are generally confused,,, and even the parliamentarians are only learning … there is a tendency to follow party politics … it will take some time and some heartaches before things start to run “smoothly”
a spade is a spade
and i have the guts to say that right now we have a government that came in with the use of a ‘clever’ coup …
chill out guys
to that i will say
haha
vote is my right and i dont give my right to anyone
just like captain jack sparrow only vote your self and win
hahaha typically nalaik panda! Good luck mr captain sparrow wanna be … nice role model you’ve got there
I read about this in the news… Hope all is well with you and yours.
Things are not too bad.
But my mind is just over occupied with the irony of the situation.
Difficult to have peace of mind. Just to ugly is the power hunger I see around me … totally sad
