Today I sit here in the shade -
on this rock, on this beach
looking at the ocean
light blue, hue, and black in the distance
I glint, for the sun is there
on its way rising
between dawn and noon,
The water shimmering in the rays.
Yes! I sit here, listening to the rhythms -
rhythms of the waves
the whoosh of the wind
broken here and there with chit chatter
from the kids enjoying the water.
Ah! This is our beach. Our “going to the beach”
time at the “beach” spent in water.

The shimmering water as seen from my lens, from where I sit.
This beach concept is very different
from a western perspective – from the cool climates.
I say this from my experiences overseas
from the beaches I have witnessed in Oz land
I say this from what I see on the “box”.
there, there is sun tanning, here it is not.
Of course in our resorts we see beach chairs.
But you see, it’s different here
we don’t like baking in the sun!
For baking is what will happen
if you lie down on our beach, under the sun.

Young ones – having an absolutely fantastic time; captured from my lens
We, the locals, call the blue water our “beach”
Going to the beach just means going for a dip,
going for a swim, a fun time in water.
We don’t really say let’s hit the beach -
we say let’s go to moodhu
“moodhu” being the sea, the lagoon
the shallow water.
For the young romantics at heart
this is the time for underwater flirtations,
the secret they share, a bit of intimacy
in broad daylight, in front of watchful eyes.
For lovers there’s nothing greater
than a secretive kiss, a caress stolen underwater
unbeknown to the watchful ‘parent police’. LOL
Going to moodhu we Maldivians excel in.
Let’s go to moodhu means
dipping in the water for hours at end
getting soaked in the water until your fingers wrinkle.
Going to moodhu means, swimming dipping, floating,
just getting absorbed by the water.
The sun keeps us warm without giving us a shiver.
Going to moodhu also means this for the boys:
getting their t-shirts off as a makeshift fish net
and trying their hands at catching the fluttering tiny fish.
[no such luxary for girls, mind you
]
Going to moodhu means a bit of water polo,
a bit of tag game, a bit of pushing and pulling and shrieking!
Going to moodhu is quite fun in large groups.

And also for people like me,
going to moodhu means accompanying the kids -
granting their request of “mamma let’s go to moodhu”.
And for people like me – people with wandering minds
going to moodhu also means sitting under a shady tree
watching the kids having fun -
seeing them but not seeing them;
my wandering mind starts to cruise the galaxy of my mind.
Come to moodhu with me

family & friends enjoying a game of water polo & more

P.S.
I got another tick on that list. This one just took me about 5 hrs of dedicated work.
Have been sitting on it for over 5 months now. Can’t help curse myself for not tackling it sooner. Too much sulking is not good – I should remember that
